Start Mission

For defense-tech & dual-use startups

Break into defense faster — with a partner invested in your success.

Defense Valley becomes your operational arm — from market-entry strategy to your first signed contracts. And when it fits, we invest ourselves.

Open door, hard entry.

Breaking into defense is complex, opaque and relationship-driven — superior technology alone doesn't win contracts.

  1. Complex procurement

Layered regulations, classified frameworks and long, politically driven decision cycles that outsiders struggle to navigate.

  2. Opaque networks

Success depends on trusted relationships with procurement officers, primes and government stakeholders — all hard to access cold.

  3. High cost of failure

A wrong market-entry strategy wastes years. One misstep can lock a company out of the ecosystem entirely.

  4. No clear roadmap

Startups have superior technology but lack the operational playbook to turn innovation into contracts and partnerships.

Time-to-first-contract is the metric that decides whether you make it.

One hub, three sides — built to work for you.

Defense Valley works like a multisided marketplace: every side creates value for the others, and the network gets stronger with every vetted participant. But defense doesn't run on open platforms — it runs on trust, compliance and curation. So we orchestrate personally what an algorithm matches elsewhere.

  • You get customers and capital in one place — a direct line to primes, procurement and investors.
  • Corporates bring real capability demand — buyers actively looking for what you develop.
  • Capital brings funding and follow-on rounds — investors who trust our vetting enough to move fast.

The network effect works for you — every side makes the others stronger.

How market entry works

Your path into the German defense market.

Market entry is a sequence, not a single sale. This is the path we run with our startups — condensed from the playbook we use in every engagement.

  1. Positioning & eligibility

Before investing in the market, clarify export-control exposure, security-clearance requirements and whether your product maps to a stated capability need of the Bundeswehr — this framing decides which doors open.

  2. First contact — through the right door

The German market has defined entry points: the Cyber Innovation Hub of the Bundeswehr, BAAINBw as the procurement authority, prime contractors sourcing suppliers, and accelerators such as the Palladion Defence Accelerator, part of NATO DIANA.

  3. Pilot & validation

Put the system in a user's hands. Structured pilots and exercises turn a promising technology into an evidenced capability — and turn an unknown vendor into a known quantity for the buyer.

  4. Procurement — ride the fast lane

Germany’s 2026 procurement-acceleration law (BwBBG) shortens the path from selection to contract. Knowing which instrument applies — direct award, framework agreement or innovation channel — decides your timeline.

  5. First contract & scale

Convert the pilot into a paid contract, then scale across the services — Heer, Luftwaffe, Marine, CIR — and into allied European markets from a German reference customer.

Startup FAQ

Entering the German defense market — what founders ask us

How long does it take to win a first Bundeswehr contract?

Plan in quarters, not weeks: pilots and innovation instruments can produce first paid engagements comparatively fast, while classic open tenders take far longer. The biggest lever is entering through the right door with the right maturity story — that is exactly what we build with you.

Do we need a German subsidiary to sell to the Bundeswehr?

Not necessarily for a first pilot. For series contracts, security-cleared work and many funding instruments, a German or EU entity with cleared personnel becomes a practical requirement — the key is sequencing that investment correctly, not making it on day one.

Can foreign startups enter the German defense market?

Yes — startups from allied nations do it successfully. Export-control regimes, national-security review and clearance requirements differ by country of origin, so that assessment is step one of any serious market entry.

What is the BwBBG — the German procurement fast lane?

The Gesetz zur beschleunigten Planung und Beschaffung für die Bundeswehr (BwBBG, 2026) accelerates planning and procurement so capability reaches the force faster. For startups it materially improves the market-entry math: shorter paths from selection to contract.

Does Defense Valley invest in the startups it advises?

Yes — where it fits, we take equity alongside our operational work, including equity-based engagement models. We sit on your side of the table and only work with companies we believe can win.
